Spear shafts: FAQs
Here are some of the most common questions we get asked about spear shafts. Have a read, and hopefully, you’ll be set to purchase the perfect shaft for your needs.
What length of shaft do I need when spearfishing?
The answer to this question really depends on your personal fishing habits and practices. As a general rule, the longer the shaft, the greater the range. This means you won’t have to swim so close to your target to get a good shot.
It’s essential to keep in mind, however, that longer shafts can be cumbersome and awkward to manoeuvre in the water. If you’re a beginner, you might be better off with a shorter shaft.
What shaft diameter do I need when spearfishing?
Alongside shaft length, shaft diameter is an important factor. A shaft with a small diameter weighs less than one of a thicker diameter, even if they are the same length. A thinner shaft, therefore, will travel faster when fired from your gun. This can be extremely useful if you are preying on smaller fish that move quickly, especially if you are only a short distance away.
What’s more, because they’ve got less heft propelling them forward, thinner shafts are less likely to become damaged if you miss and hit a rock instead. This makes them a great option for beginners.
If you are targeting larger fish, on the other hand, penetration power becomes crucial, even more so than firing speed. Thicker spear shafts will travel with greater momentum and will strike your fish harder.
How should I store my spear shafts?
Proper care and storage are the keys to getting years of use out of your spearfishing gear – including your spear shafts. When you return home from a fishing trip, be sure to rinse your shafts in cool, fresh water. Leave them to dry completely.
Then, store your shafts in a dark, cool place. You might like to keep them in a spearfishing bag for added protection.
