Essential for surface & underwater safety.
A must have device to signal your location to other divers, skippers and passing vessels. Vessels must keep a 30 m radius from any erected dive flag, providing plenty of space for divers to surface without the risk of propeller strike.
When it comes to spearfishing, safety is everything. And that’s why investing in top-quality flags, floats, and buoys is essential. Here at Dive Warehouse, we've got you covered.
Why do I need spearfishing floats?
Spearfishing floats, flags, and buoys keep you safe in the water in two critical ways:
- Spearfishing floats are, in many cases, a legal requirement. They warn other boats and vessels that there are divers in the area. This can help prevent potentially dangerous run-ins.
- It’s common practice to connect your speargun to a float line and float. If you spear a rather large fish that puts up a fight, you’re able to let go of your gun and head to the surface for air. Your speargun is then easy to retrieve because you know exactly where it is.
Should I use a hard float or an inflatable float?
When looking to buy spearfishing floats online, you’ll be able to choose from two main types of float: hard floats and inflatable floats, which are sometimes referred to as soft floats.
Let’s take a look at each of the float types in more detail.
Spearfishing hard floats
Hard floats are durable, hard-wearing, and extremely buoyant. You can use hard floats in pretty much any fishing conditions, even in the roughest swells and rockiest shorelines. Hard floats are ideal if you plan on catching larger fish.
Spearfishing inflatable floats
Soft floats are better suited to spearfishing in shallow waters for smaller fish. Many inflatable floats with feature two layers and a canvas covering to protect against punctures and cuts.
What size spearfishing float do I need?
The bigger the float you use, the more buoyancy it will offer. So, if you plan on catching larger fish, you’ll need a larger float. Similarly, if you plan on fishing for smaller fish, a smaller float will do the job just fine.
The size of your float will really depend on your spearfishing preferences and goals. You might also like to purchase multiple floats to be used in various conditions – a larger, hard float for rough conditions and a smaller, inflatable float for fishing in shallower, calmer water.
